Ben Abbott, Founder, Utrinque Yachts
Ben Abbott · Founder & Adviser

I built Utrinque Yachts around one focus: explorer and expedition yachts, of any size or classification. I work with a small number of serious clients on acquisition, disposal, and new build, and every mandate comes back to the same question, does this vessel actually deliver what its owner needs it to do.

I grew up watching boats with my grandfather near the docks, and that stayed with me through 22 years in the British Army, where I reached the rank of Warrant Officer. I served in elite forces, and separately as a specialist instructor, preparing soldiers physically for elite and special forces selection. Afterwards I studied economics and mathematical science, which gave me an analytical edge that most of this industry simply doesn't have. My thinking on the explorer market has since been published by The Superyacht Group and featured in an interview with Superyacht Investor, and I write The 3% Market, where I look properly at the value and mechanics behind serious explorer ownership. A clarifying moment on the water off Palma de Mallorca is where the idea for this firm actually took shape.

My approach rests on three things. Explorer only expertise: I hold deep, specific knowledge of true explorer yachts, hull forms, ice class, range, autonomy, donor conversions, and yard pedigree, and my advice is grounded in genuine expedition capability rather than marketing language. Discipline, held with discretion: every engagement runs through a structured process from brief to close, but I operate as a long term adviser, not a transaction counter, taking the time to understand what a client is actually trying to achieve before I suggest a single vessel. And one point of contact, working globally: I am based in Edinburgh, outside the traditional yacht hubs, and I work directly with owners, captains, yards, and advisers wherever the vessel or the client happens to be. There is no team, no volume target, and every deal is handled personally, by me.

When the question is a genuine one about explorer yachts, what counts, what it's actually worth, how the deal should be structured, which yard truly delivers, I want to be the first call. Not simply a trusted yacht adviser. A completely trusted individual.
